Scanning NFC passes with USB readers

The Passcreator Smart Scan app for iOS connects with supported NFC readers and reads passes contactlessly. This works for Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes, as long as Passcreator has enabled NFC for your account.

Requirements

  • Passcreator has enabled NFC passes for your account, and at least one published template has NFC switched on under Barcode & NFC › Enable NFC.
  • All templates that the loaded app configuration validates use the same Pass Type ID, that is the same certificate.
  • You have a supported NFC reader for Apple VAS and Google Smart Tap, connected to your device via USB.

See NFC passes overview if NFC is not active for your account yet.

Steps

Create an app configuration

NFC validation runs through a regular Smart Scan app configuration.

  1. Go to Validation in the sidebar and click Create Configuration.
  2. Give the configuration a name and select the pass templates it validates. The configuration must only validate NFC enabled templates. If it covers more than one template, they must share a Pass Type ID.
  3. Choose the scan mode and other options as usual. See App configurations and scan modes.
  4. Load the configuration in the Smart Scan app. Either log in and select it, or use a configuration link or QR code.

Enable NFC reader scanning in the Smart Scan app

The Smart Scan app supports NFC readers and other barcode scanners that connect via USB and identify themselves as a keyboard. As soon as you connect the reader, holders can tap their phone on it. The app picks up the value from the reader automatically and verifies it the same way it verifies barcodes scanned with the camera. You see the usual valid or invalid result on screen.

You can now start scanning passes.

Scanning passes

What the pass holder does at the reader differs between iPhone and Android.

  • Apple VAS. Tap, authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, tap again.
  • Google Smart Tap. Wake the screen, tap and hold until the checkmark appears.

If Android holders run into problems, see Troubleshooting Google Smart Tap.
