Apple VAS
Requirements
- Apple VAS passes are available on request. Contact Passcreator with a detailed description of your use case, and we sort out the details with you. The specifics are subject to an NDA with Apple. See NFC passes overview for how to submit an NFC request.
Steps
Supported devices and readers
Every iPhone with an NFC module supports VAS. That is every model since the iPhone 5S. On the reader side you can integrate any NFC device that supports Apple VAS, for example a credit card terminal or a USB reader connected to the Smart Scan app.
Setting up a template for Apple VAS
Passcreator approves your NFC request and provisions the NFC certificate. After that, set up the template.
- Open the template in the editor and go to Barcode & NFC.
- Switch on Enable NFC in the NFC box.
- Decide whether the holder authenticates before the iPhone transmits the pass value. If so, enable
Face ID or Touch ID required (iOS). Decide also whether to keep the barcode fallback. The optionDo not add a barcode as fallback when NFC is enabledremoves it. - Save and publish your changes.
How a holder redeems an NFC pass on an iPhone
A holder who has stored an NFC enabled Wallet pass on their iPhone does this at the reader.
- Tap the iPhone on the NFC reader. The pass appears on the lock screen automatically. If the reader recognizes multiple passes, the holder picks one from a selection.
- Authenticate using Touch ID or Face ID. The iPhone asks the holder to authenticate.
- Tap again to read the pass. After successful authentication the holder taps again or stays in range of the reader. The iPhone now transfers the pass value to the NFC reader.
The whole flow takes a moment or two. The phone stays locked and no app opens.
Distributing passes via NFC tags
Apple VAS accounts can also use the NFC Pass Distribution URL integration under Integrations in the sidebar. It hands out passes via physical NFC tags. You can ask the holder for personalization data such as name and email address before Passcreator creates the pass.
