Google Smart Tap
Requirements
- Passcreator enables Google Smart Tap per account. Contact Passcreator if you want to use it, and we activate it for your Passcreator account.
Steps
Supported readers
You can integrate any NFC device that supports Google Smart Tap. Examples are a credit card terminal, a point of sale reader or a USB reader connected to the Smart Scan app. See Scanning NFC passes with USB readers.
Setting up a template
Once Smart Tap is active for your account, enable NFC on the template under Barcode & NFC › Enable NFC. Then save and publish your changes. Keep the barcode fallback enabled if possible. If a holder's phone has no NFC chip, Google Wallet displays the QR code instead and you can still scan the pass.
How a holder redeems an NFC pass on Android
A holder who has stored an NFC enabled Google Wallet pass on their phone does this at the reader. The exact behavior differs slightly depending on the device vendor and the holder's settings.
- Wake up the screen. Android reads an NFC pass only while the screen is on. The phone can usually stay locked.
- Tap the phone on the NFC reader. The phone must stay in range of the reader until the app shows that it read the pass. Google Wallet shows a preview of the pass and a checkmark once it has transmitted the value.
Requirements on the holder's phone
Smart Tap works when the holder's phone meets four conditions.
- NFC is on.
- Google Wallet is the default wallet for Tap and pay.
- The holder saved the pass on the same Google account they use in Google Wallet on the phone.
- The Hold near terminal to use toggle of the pass is on. The holder finds it at the bottom of the pass in Google Wallet.
Holders do not need to pay with Google Wallet. Passes work at NFC terminals even if the holder never uses Google Wallet for payments.
