How do I create a digital business card?

A wallet pass makes a good digital business card. It lives on the phone, you can update it any time, and its QR code lets others save the contact details with one scan. This tutorial builds a business card template from scratch, including a vCard QR code and personalization for every card holder.

Steps

Create the template

  1. Go to Templates in the sidebar, click New Template and choose Create new template....
  2. Walk through the wizard. Enter a Template Name such as "Business Card", your Organization and a Description, select a certificate, and keep the default wallet apps.
  3. Finish the wizard. You land in the template editor.
  4. In the editor, go to General › Pass Type and select Generic. The Generic pass type works best for a business card look, because it supports a thumbnail image for a photo of the card holder.

Apply your corporate design

  1. Go to Design & Content › Colors and set Label color, Field value color and Background color to match your corporate color scheme.
  2. Go to Design & Content › Images and upload your Logo and Icon. After selecting a file you can crop the image to the required size.
  3. The Generic pass type also offers a Thumbnail image slot, which is ideal for a photo of the card holder. Decide how you want to use it.
    • If you don't want photos on the cards, turn off Use thumbnail image.
    • If every card should show a different photo, tick Thumbnail different for each pass. You then provide the photo whenever you create a card, through a form, in the backend, or as an image URL in a bulk processing CSV.

Add additional properties

Additional properties store the personal details of each card holder.

  1. Go to Personalization in the editor menu.
  2. Add one property for each piece of personal information you want on the card. Start with First Name and Last Name, then add properties like Position, Mobile, Email or Website. Pick a fitting Type per property, such as Text, Email or Phone Number.
  3. Each property becomes a placeholder. You reference it anywhere in the template with curly braces, for example {First Name}.

Build the vCard QR code

The QR code turns the pass into a shareable contact. Anyone who scans it saves the contact details directly to their address book.

  1. Go to Barcode & NFC and set Barcode type to QR-Code.
  2. In the Value field, enter text in vCard format that uses your placeholders. Here is an example.
BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
N:{Last Name};{First Name};;
FN:{First Name} {Last Name}
ORG:{Company}
TITLE:{Position}
TEL;TYPE=work;type=cell;type=voice;type=pref:{Mobile}
EMAIL:{Email}
URL:{Website}
END:VCARD

Add or remove lines following the vCard format. The full specification is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VCard. Reference only properties you created under Personalization.

Design the front and back

  1. Go to Design & Content › Frontfields and add fields for the information that should be visible on the card. For example, use a primary field with {First Name} {Last Name} and secondary fields for position and phone number. Typing { in a value field opens a dropdown with all available placeholders.
  2. Go to Design & Content › Backfields and add at least one field with further information. Good candidates are important links, instructions, or a support contact for card holders who have an issue with their pass. Every pass must include contact data, an email address or a phone number.
  3. Click Save, then publish the template via Publish changes... on the template details page.

Create the business cards

You now have several ways to create the actual cards.

  • A form. Let employees or customers request their own card via a web form. Passcreator fills the placeholders with what they enter and sends the pass to them. You currently create and edit forms in the classic interface. Go to Distribution › Forms in the sidebar, where Edit Form opens the classic editor. See Forms.
  • Directly in Passcreator. Go to Passes, click + Pass › Create single pass, select the template and fill in the fields. See Creating a single pass.
  • Bulk processing. Upload a CSV file to create hundreds of cards at once. See Bulk processing with CSV files.
  • API integration. Create cards automatically from your own systems via the REST API. See REST API and API keys.
