Using passes on Android

Android has no single preinstalled wallet app, so the experience depends on how you configured your template. Most templates use Google Wallet, and as an alternative or fallback pass holders can use the free third party PassWallet app. This article covers both.

The pass download page recognizes an Android device and shows the matching save button for the wallet apps you enabled on the template.

Using Google Wallet

Prerequisites

The Android device meets these criteria.

  • The device has Google Wallet installed and up to date. Check the Play Store for available updates.
  • The holder has opened Google Wallet once and accepted the terms and conditions.
  • The holder has signed in with a Google account.
  • If the holder saves the pass on a desktop computer, the browser must use the same Google account as the Google Wallet app on the Android device. Otherwise the pass won't appear on the phone.

Saving a pass

  1. Open the link to the pass on any device.
  2. Tap the Save to Google Wallet button. The page shows it whenever the template has Google Wallet enabled.
  3. Open the Google Wallet app to view and use the pass.

Using PassWallet

PassWallet is a free third party app that displays passes in the Apple Wallet format on Android.

  1. Open the link to the pass and tap Add to PassWallet.
  2. If the device does not have PassWallet yet, the page redirects to the Google Play Store. Install the free app, and the pass arrives after the download.
  3. Launch the PassWallet app to view the pass and show it at the venue or store.

If the pass includes locations, also called geofences, PassWallet shows a notification when the holder is near the configured coordinates.

Archiving passes in PassWallet

Holders archive a pass by selecting it and tapping the tray icon at the bottom, the second icon from the left. To bring it back, they tap the icon with three lines at the bottom left, open Archive, select the pass and tap the same tray icon again.

Which app pass holders use

The template decides this, not the holder. The download page offers the wallet apps you enabled there. If your account has the Samsung Wallet add on, Passcreator can also offer Samsung Wallet as the primary app on Samsung devices. See Apple Wallet versus Google Wallet for the differences that matter when choosing.
