Understanding the States of NFC Passes in Apple Wallet
Your pass may ask you to bind it to your iCloud Account
If you download an NFC enabled Wallet pass to Apple Wallet, your iPhone may ask you to bind the pass to your Apple-ID (or iCloud account). This is a security feature that can be enabled for NFC passes. This guide describes the different states the pass can have and what you should do in order to get help.
You don't see a message after authenticating with FaceID or TouchID
In this case, you're all set and your pass will work.
The pass shows "Activating"
This means the pass could not be bound to your Apple-ID and is currently retrying. Usually this message should disappear after some time. It can occur if a backend system didn't respond fast enough initially for example.
The pass shows "Pass Disabled"
If your pass shows a messages that says "Pass Disabled" this can have two different reasons. Both will be mentioned in the message you see. You will receive a push notification when your pass has such a state telling you that something is wrong.
- You need to log in to iCloud using your Apple-ID.
- The pass was already used by another Apple-ID and you can't use it. In this case, please reach out to the pass issuer. Contact details can usually be found on the back of the pass (tap the three dots and click on "Pass Details").
