HSV: Digital membership cards in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet

Challenge: A digital membership card for more than 87,000 members

HSV e.V. is a universal sports club with a long tradition and one of the largest sports clubs in Germany. On the occasion of HSV's 133rd birthday, club members should also receive a digital membership card for use on their smartphone, in addition to the physical card.

The digital card had to work for every member and still feel personal, from the Supporters Club to the Kids Club.

Solution: Personalized wallet passes for every member

HSV created personalized wallet passes in Passcreator for all members. Members save their card in Apple Wallet on the iPhone or on their Android smartphone.

QR code on the physical card

A QR code printed on the physical membership card contains the link to the digital version. As soon as members scan the QR code with their iPhone or Android smartphone, they can save the pass.

Own subdomain

To increase trust and personalize the approach, the wallet passes are delivered via a separate subdomain.

Background images by membership type

Each pass shows the membership number and a background image that depends on the membership. Supporters Club members, for example, receive a different background image than Kids Club members, which makes the card even more personal.

Implementation: Delivered together with the physical card

The physical membership cards with the printed QR code were sent to members by mail. Scanning the code takes members to the subdomain, where they add the digital card to their wallet. From now on, new members always receive a digital version of their membership card as well.

Outcome: The membership card on every smartphone

• Use as a digital admission ticket to HSV events such as general meetings
• Direct contact to the HSV e.V. office and the data change form
• News as push notifications directly on the smartphone
• Every new member automatically receives the digital membership card
