Orkan, formerly Shell in Iceland, runs around 80 fuel stations. Its loyalty program used plastic fuel keys for authentication and discounts. With the Passcreator Retail Suite, customer, loyalty and gift cards now live in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet and work at the pump and in the shop.

The challenge was a loyalty program on plastic fuel keys

Orkan, formerly Shell in Iceland, runs around 80 fuel stations. Its loyalty program relied on plastic fuel keys that customers used for authentication and discounts at the pump.

Customers wanted a mobile solution instead of physical cards and keys. The old setup also made targeted marketing hard and kept the shop and the pump apart. And any new solution had to work with the Tokheim system that runs the pumps.

The solution puts every pass in the Wallet

With the Passcreator Retail Suite, Orkan issues customer cards, loyalty cards and gift cards as passes in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. The team issues and renews passes in the back office. Balances update in real time, and new passes reach the customer's phone right away.

Implementation with the Tokheim pump system

The Retail Suite is connected to the Tokheim software at the stations. Customers authenticate and get their benefits at the pump with the pass on their phone, just as they did with the fuel key. Orkan also planned a voucher campaign for windscreen washer fluid and related services.

The outcome is one pass for the shop and the pump

Customers carry their Orkan pass on the phone instead of a plastic fuel key.
Private and business customers use the same digital pass.
The experience in the shop and at the pump is the same.
Orkan can build new loyalty offers on the digital pass across its network.
