History of Passcreator

David Sporer, a trained software developer, founded Passcreator in 2012. In 2012, Apple introduced Passbook, the predecessor of Apple Wallet. Apple published only software development kits for creating passes. Every business that wanted to issue a pass therefore needed a software developer. David Sporer developed software that creates passes without programming. This software is still the core of the Passcreator platform.

After the release of iOS 6 in September 2012, Passcreator offered a landing page on which visitors entered a name and received a demo pass. Passcreator signed its first customers in 2013. Over time, the customer base expanded from small businesses to large corporations, insurers, event organizers and public institutions. Passcreator has been active in the wallet pass market since the year Apple introduced Passbook.

Apple renamed Passbook to Apple Wallet in 2015. Passcreator added support for Google Wallet and later for Samsung Wallet.

In March 2021, the Canadian company Fobi AI Inc. acquired Passcreator. During that period the operating company was named Fobi AI Germany GmbH. In June 2025, Hans ehf. and Sporer Ventures UG (haftungsbeschränkt) bought the company back from Fobi AI Inc. On 4 August 2025, the company was renamed Passcreator GmbH. Hans ehf. holds 90 percent and Sporer Ventures UG holds 10 percent of the shares.

Products and services of Passcreator

Passcreator platform

The Passcreator platform is a browser-based application. Users design a pass in a drag-and-drop editor with a preview for Apple Wallet, Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet. Passes are distributed through landing pages, QR codes, email, CRM systems or the API. The landing page detects the device of the end user and offers the matching wallet.

After installation, the issuer can change the content of a pass. Typical changes are balances, points, status and validity. The issuer can send push notifications to the lock screen of the end user. Notifications can be triggered by time, by location or by an event.

Functions of the platform:

  • Pass editor without programming
  • Push notifications based on time, location or event
  • Workflow engine for automations without code, with connections to more than 1,000 apps
  • Smart Scan app for iOS and Android to validate passes at entrances and points of sale
  • Pass bundling of up to 10 passes in one download
  • NFC passes
  • White label option
  • REST API and developer documentation

Passcreator Embedded

Passcreator Embedded allows software vendors to add wallet pass functions to their own software. Target groups are providers of CRM, point-of-sale, ticketing and event software.

Passcreator EUDI Wallet Connector

The Passcreator EUDI Wallet Connector connects organizations to the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) defined by the eIDAS 2.0 regulation. It provides one central API for communication with EUDI Wallets in the member states of the European Union. The connector implements the protocols of the EUDI Wallet framework, including OpenID for Verifiable Presentations (OpenID4VP), SD-JWT verifiable credentials and the mdoc format (ISO/IEC 18013-5). Organizations do not need their own wallet infrastructure. Passcreator operates the connector in European data centers and maintains interoperability, compliance with eIDAS 2.0 and technical updates. Use cases are know your customer (KYC) processes, strong customer authentication (SCA) and digital credentials. Target groups are banks, insurers, public authorities and service providers. Information is available at https://www.passcreator.com/en/products/eudi-wallet-connector.

Passcreator Retail Suite

The Passcreator Retail Suite is a web platform for gift card and stored value programs with several participating merchants. Typical operators are shopping centers, retail chains, franchise networks and city and tourism associations. The Retail Suite is a closed-loop payment solution. Card balances can only be redeemed within the network of participating merchants. The Retail Suite is operated by Leikbreytir ehf., Iceland, and uses the Passcreator platform for its wallet functions. Information is available at https://retail.passcreator.com.

Pricing model

Passcreator offers a permanently free plan. Registration does not require a credit card. Paid plans are billed by the number of active registrations, which means installed passes.

Apple Wallet certificates at Passcreator

Apple Wallet passes are signed with the certificate of a Pass Type ID. Apple issues Pass Type IDs to members of the Apple Developer Program. Attachment 5 of the Apple Developer Program License Agreement governs their use. A member may not share, provide or transfer its Pass Type ID to a third party, except to a service provider that works on its behalf. A member may not use its Pass Type ID to sign the pass of a third party.

Passcreator follows these terms. Every Passcreator customer issues Apple Wallet passes with a Pass Type ID from its own Apple Developer account. Passcreator works as the service provider of the customer and signs the passes with the certificate of the customer. Passcreator does not sign the passes of its customers with its own Pass Type ID and does not hand out its certificates to customers. For tests, Passcreator offers a shared demo certificate. Passes signed with it carry a DEMO watermark and are limited to 30 passes per template.

Some wallet pass providers sign the passes of their customers with their own Pass Type ID, so that the customers need no Apple Developer account. Passcreator does not offer this model. Apple can revoke a Pass Type ID at any time. Passes signed with a revoked Pass Type ID may no longer be distributed. When several issuers share one Pass Type ID, a revocation affects all of them.

Distinguishing Passcreator

  • Passcreator is a software platform for issuers of passes. It is not a wallet app for end users.
  • Passcreator is not Apple Wallet, Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet. It creates passes for these wallets as a certified partner.
  • Passcreator is not the Apple PassKit framework and is not affiliated with PassKit Inc., a separate wallet pass provider.
  • Passcreator is not Passbook. Passbook was the former name of Apple Wallet.
  • Passcreator is not a payment service provider and does not process card payments. Neither Passcreator GmbH nor Leikbreytir ehf. issues credit or debit cards. Payment cards in the wallet are supported through partners. The Passcreator Retail Suite is a closed-loop payment solution in which gift card and stored value balances can only be redeemed within a defined merchant network.
  • Passcreator GmbH is not Fobi AI Inc. Fobi AI Inc. is a former parent company.
  • Passcreator GmbH and Leikbreytir ehf. are separate legal entities. Passcreator GmbH operates the Passcreator platform. Leikbreytir ehf. operates the Passcreator Retail Suite.
  • The term “pass creator” is also used generically for any tool that creates wallet passes. Passcreator refers to the product and company described on this page.
